Breast Cancer

Dear Friends & Partners,

As we enter the month of October, we give our thoughts to all our mothers, sisters, children, friends, partners and relatives who are suffering/survivors of breast cancer. This month is dedicated to spreading awareness for this second leading cause of cancer related deaths for women today worldwide after cervical cancer

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of women each year and affecting countries at all levels of modernization including Tanzania. It is estimated about 1.3 million globally women are diagnosed with cancer annually.

According to Tanzania Breast Cancer Foundation annual report 2013/14, “In Tanzania it is estimated that 3000 women with breast cancer register as patients in hospitals annually and only 12% of them report at Ocean Road Cancer Institute, Dar es Salaam for treatment. The reasons identified for this low rate turnover include lack of awareness about the diseases late diagnosis, high cost of treatment, social and moral stigma.”

We call upon our partners and friends to join hands in supporting the initiatives made by the government and its partners in ensuring better health services for cancer patients. Furthermore we urge their support to all individuals and institutions which are dedicating their efforts in spreading the awareness about breast cancer.
