30 TUTORS EQUIPED WITH SKILLS FOR DEVELOPING TRAINING MODULES AND COMPETENCE BASED EDUCATION TRAINING CURRICULUM

In partnership with the Tropical Health Education Trust (THET) and the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MoHCDGEC) through the financial aid from Comic Relief, the Benjamin W. Mkapa Foundation (BMF) has launched a 14 days training for 30 tutors from different health training institutions (HTIs) in equipping them with skills for developing training modules and competence based education training curriculum.

Speaking at the launching of the training which took place on 18^th August 2016 at Hazina Square building in Dodoma, the guest of honor, Dr. Nassor Mzee, acting Regional Medical Officer – Dodoma, said that this training has come at the appropriate moment when the Government is facing a challenge of shortage of tutors with adequate skills for developing training modules and competence based education training curriculum. He continues that that challenge is mainly influenced by the unavailability of funds to facilitate this kind of training to tutors and also shortage of skilled trainers to facilitates the trainings in the health sector. These challenges have resulted in not reaching the required quality of the training as outlined in the curriculums.

He urges the tutors to invest their efforts in getting the knowledge and skills that will be provided to them so as they can also go and pass it to other tutor to bridge gap of shortage of skilled tutors as intended by the ministry of health. Moreover he continued by thanking Comic Relief of the funds alongside BMF and THET for organizing this important training.

Speaking on behalf of Mkapa Foundation, Dr. Adeline Saguti Nyamwihura – Program Manager Health Service Delivery said that one among other objectives of the project is to support the ministry of health strengthen training delivery system for this new cadre of community health workers. This project aims building capacity of the tutors to conduct trainings that will produce community health workers with adequate skills to effectively implement the Community Based Health Program Strategic Plan (CBHSP) of 2015 to 2020.

“Through BMF, the project will cover 10 health training institutions and 4 teaching hospitals from Lake Zone regions (Mwanza, Geita, Simiyu, Kagera and Shinyanga). Also the lake zone health resource center will also benefit from the project. The benefited 10 health training institutions includes Geita Nursing School, Kahama Nursing School, Ngudu Environmental Health Training Institution, Bugando Nursing School, Tarime Nursing School, Shirati Nursing School, Murugwanza Nursing School, Rubya Nursing School, St. Magdalene Nursing School and Karagwe Institute for Allied Health.” Said Dr. Adeline Saguti Nyamwihura.

Lastly the training coordinator from the Ministry of Health, Ms. Vumilia Mmari said that, the training is important as this new community health workers cadre needs to be expanded by producing more tutors with adequate skills for facilitating training’s that will will facilitate the development of this cadre.
