Benjamin Mkapa Foundation Participates in the Official Inauguration of the Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation
On 19th February 2022, H.E. Mariam Mwinyi officially inaugurated the Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation (ZMBF) at the Mao Zedong sports grounds in Zanzibar. The ceremony was well graced by National Leaders, Ambassadors, Corporate Executives, Political and Faith Based Leaders who first expressed their solidarity by a 6KM walk from KiembeSamaki Boutros to the sports ground.
The launch was a promising step towards realisation of Mama Mariam Mwinyi’s Vision, and Mission for Zanzibar’s women, youth and children. The Foundation aims to improve and equally promote the life standard of all Zanzibaris through working with women, youth and children. The focus is to empower these targeted groups socially and economically to facilitate wholesome development in the Zanzibar Community.
In her speech, H.E. Mariam Mwinyi praised the work done by the 8th Phase Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar under the stewardship of President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi and among other things his commitment towards attaining development in Zanzibar, promoting the Blue Economy, combating Gender Based Violence and improving health and welfare for the Zanzibaris. Mama Mariam said that it was in witnessing this drive from the President that she felt motivated to complement these efforts by creating an opportunity for improving the lives of Zanzibaris.
“I would like to express to you all, the two main reasons drivng me me towards this commitment of establishing the Foundation t; Firstly, I would rather use my position ,skills , ideas and experience in contributing towards the socio-economic welfare health and wellbeing of Zanzibaris especially women, adolescents (girls and boys) and children. Secondly, according to the position the community has accorded me and within my family the Zanzibar First Lady.”
She further said, “I am at same time I’m a mother, a sister, an aunt, daughter in law and still a daughter; I believe I’m at a proper place to understand women’s roles and their relationship in the community. Thus, without any hesitation I have the duty to empower any woman in her roles roles, health and in decision making. As the elders said, when you educate a woman, you educate the entire community, family and the entire world.
ZMBF expects to collaborate with partners at all levels i.e., the Government, Private Sector, Non-Governmental Organizations and Development Partners. It is through this collaborative spirit that the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation (BMF) was invited to be a technical partner facilitating the establishment of ZMBF.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation, who have played a key role in ensuring that ZMBF kick starts from the ground up. It is my hope that this support and collaboration will continue, thus ensuring that ZMBF meets its objectives,” Mama Mariam Mwinyi graciously said.
