Joint meeting between the Governments, Development Partners & Stakeholders to advancing for community health workers agenda took place in Dar es Salaam on 28th February 2018. The meeting which took place at Mwalimu Nyerere Convention Center was graced by Hon. Ummy Mwalimu, Minister of Health Community, Development, Gender, Elderly and Children.

Giving her remarks on behalf of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Ummy Mwalimu said that, the government is planning to strengthen primary health care in the country and one of the strategy to achieve that is by having community health workers.
“The Government is determined to have have 30,000 community health workers in more than 15,000 villages by 2020”, stated Hon. Ummy Mwalimu. `
Rahel Sheiza, Director of Programs from BMF, said that, BMF and other partners are committed supporting the government to implement community health workers program which aim at improving provision of health services at community levels. There has been a need for investment at health facility and community level and with this program in place, we are expecting to reach our country goal and have a healthy society.

Dr. Amalbega Kasangala, a representative from Health Education Unit of the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Elderly and Children, clarified that, the government is focused more on prevention compared to treatment. She continues that the community health workers will be equipped with skills that will enable them identify a community member such a pregnant woman, children e.t.c with risks of getting diseases and provide assistance through counselling before going to the hospital.
