The Mkapa Foundation Endowment Fund

In its pursuit to realize the vision of the Mkapa Foundation of leaving no one behind with accessing health care and in the spirit of becoming more self- reliant, an Endowment Fund has been recognized as one of the resource mobilization strategies applied by the Foundation to achieve the targets define  its third 5-years Strategic Business Plan which runs from July 2019 to June 2024.The establishment of this Endowment Fund has emerged as one of the strong innovative finance tool that can provide the Foundation with a long-term source of income.

We could have waited for a banana to appear, but we believe in the spirit of cheese- development and confidence. We are not so poor that we are unable to carry out this project”   His Excellency Benjamin Mkapa – January 2005

Launch of the Fund

This concept is building upon lessons learnt from the successful 16 years execution of the Mkapa Foundation work in the health sector in Tanzania Mainland and Isles which has impacted more than 24 Million people either directly or indirectly. We have proudly continued playing critical complementary role to addressing the bottlenecks in Health Sector through close collaboration with the Government, Development Partners, Private sector, and other stakeholders including the Community.

The Foundation aims to leverage resources to achieve its vision, mission and goals through different financing modalities including the multilateral and bilateral partners financing/grants, private sector contribution and now the Endowment Fund.
The establishment of the Endowment Fund is rationalized with the need to leverage financial resources to support the institutional development and sustainability, as well as ensuring multi-year funding structure to support the entire 5 years Strategic Business Plan or longer-term initiatives of the Mkapa Foundation.

The Endowment fund for the Mkapa Foundation was officially launched by Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania during the 1st Mkapa Legacy Symposium which was held last year in July 2021, in commemorating the life of H.E. Benjamin William Mkapa who passed away on 23rd July 2020.

The Benjamin Mkapa Foundation intends to raise money both locally and internationally for the Endowment Fund, by reaching out to philanthropists, corporate bodies, private foundations, development agencies, friends of BMF, individuals, Board of Trustees and staff of BMF.

Expanding the Funds

During the month of July 2022 and beyond, the Foundation will engage in activities to fundraise for its Endowment Fund with a 5-year plan of having in place an Endowment fund of TZS 33,716,546,646 (equivalent USD 15,200,626.58) by year 2025/26.

We are delighted to have the Settlor of the Foundation, His Excellency Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chair of Revolutionary Council willing to host a Fund-raising Dinner in July 2022 in Zanzibar, and we look forward to your participation.

The Endowment Fund will be effectively managed and coordinated in alignment to the Institutional guidelines and policies and in accordance with the best international standards of managing Endowment Fund investments.
