The Mkapa Legacy Initiative is a collection of initiatives that honor and sustain the legacy of The Late Benjamin William Mkapa who was the 3rd President of the United Republic of Tanzania ( 1995-2005) and demised on 23rd July 2020.

The Mkapa Foundation existence and the work it undertakes, serves as the sole legacy initiative of Late Benjamin W. Mkapa thus its perpetuity is critical to enable reach the underserved and ensuring healthy lives for all.

The Mkapa Legacy Initiative comprises of the forum famously known as The Mkapa Legacy Summit held on alternative years; The Mkapa Fellowship Programme; the BMF Endowment Fund; and the Business Arm for health sector solutions under the Imara Horizon Company.

The summit is vested with the purpose of appreciating H.E. Mkapa's legacy during and post -Presidency, particularly reflections on Socio-economic Development matters related to Tanzania and Africa at large.

Late Benjamin William Mkapa being a well known African Leader who had multiple values such as being a Reformist, Democratic, Institutionalist and a Champion of Private- Public Partnership for Impact, he also pioneered the establishment of the National Development Vision 2025. Specifically for the health sector he spearheaded the 1st Health sector reforms of Tanzania by enhancing Sector Wide Approach in programming and financing; establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme and was a Champion of AIDS Free Generation, to mention a few. He further continued his service after Presidency by establishment of Mkapa Foundation which is committed to accelerate and attain health for all. The Summit is a unique opportunity to learn and /or adopt from Mkapa’s legacy and to develop new ideas for addressing the emerging challenges facing Tanzania and the world today. The Foundation in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania have so far hosted three forums in July 2021, July 2022, and July 2024, which is intertwined with a National HRH Conference, as a pre-summit event. The demographic changes are critical to human capital development and countries’ development prospects. Sustaining a robust and resilient health system is critical in combatting communicable and the increasing non- communicable health conditions/diseases; ensuring national and global health security; adoption of fast-growing technology and Artificial Intelligence and on addressing the effects of Climate change on Health. Similarly, advancement and prioritization on gender equality is a cornerstone to achieving socio-economic development.  

The program has had a significant impact on health care in Tanzania. In the past five years, the program has recruited and trained over 180 health professionals, built over 30 new health facilities, and provided support to over 1,700 health workers.

The BMF has established an Endowment Fund to provide a stable and ongoing source of financial support. The BMF Endowment Fund which was officially launched on 14th July 2021 by Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, had already surpassed 1.8 billion shillings by August 2023.

The BMF Endowment Fund which was officially launched on 14th July 2021 by Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, had already surpassed 1.8 billion shillings by August 2023. The EF capital to be raised by BMF from potential endowers is anticipated to generate interest income, which will be utilized to support interventions as per Endowment Fund Guidelines and approved by the BMF Board.
