NEW BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation (BMF) is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Board Chairperson and Trustees that is effective from 1st September 2024. With reference to the Trust Deed of the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation (Edition 2022), the Settlor of the Benjamin W. Mkapa Foundation, His Excellency Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of Revolutionary Council is vested with the powers to appoint Board of Trustees of the Foundation, thus hereby convenes together a distinguished group of leaders and experts from various fields to provide oversight roles and guidance on the  Foundation’s strategic direction and impact for the term of four years.

H.E. Ambassador Liberata Rutageruka Mulamula (MP)

Chair Person

Excellency Mulamula is a seasoned diplomat who brings over 35 years of experience in international development and diplomacy who has served Tanzania at the level of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, an Ambassador of Tanzania to the United States of America, a Member of Parliament and the founder and first Executive Secretary of the Regional Secretariat of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).

Dr. Ali Salim Ali

Trustee

A Medical Doctor with more than 30 years in clinical and public health specializing in HIV/AIDS and TB, coupled with leadership experience whereas currently, is the Senior Advisor-HIV/AIDS for the Zanzibar Association of the People Living with HIV/AIDS(ZAPHA+) and Ministerial appointee as Chairperson of the Zanzibar Private Health Advisory Board. He has held various leadership positions in the health sector, including as the Executive Director of the Mnazi Mmoja Hospital Zanzibar, Executive Director of the Zanzibar AIDS Commission, and various positions in Botswana, Namibia, and Zambia.

Rtd. Judge Susana Bernard Mkapa

Trustee

A retired Judge of The High Court of Tanzania with over 30 years of experience in law and leadership, is well vested with working experience in various Government positions including being the Director of Legal Services and then Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, as well as serving on the Fair Competition Tribunal and Tanzania Trade Development Authority Boards.

Mr. Steve Kisakye

Trustee

Currently serving as the Partner and Co-founder of AXUM an Afrocentric Impact firm. He is leveraging his 25 years of experience in development programs across health, agriculture, mining, and finance in the African region. He has held various technical and leadership positions including being the Global Managing Director of Dalberg Implement, formerly working for Acacia Mining Plc – Tanzania, Hygeia Foundation – Nigeria, William J. Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) – Nigeria, Kenya, and Tanzania, as well as Médecins Sans Frontières (Spain) – Tanzania.

Mr. Emilian Busara

Trustee

A seasoned expert in business administration with over 20 years in finance, investment, and operations, as well as holding technical and leadership roles with non-governmental organizations in Tanzania including MDH, Engender Health, World Vision, as well as East Africa Trademark, Citibank and Plan International. He possesses vast experience in training and organizational development, Investment and Financial Management, and Managing Donor-Funded Initiatives. He is a part-time lecturer and trainer on business, governance, finance, life skills, and auditing

Dr. Christine Cassian Ngonyani

Trustee

With 30 years of experience working in various positions within government ministries, agencies, and departments holding technical and leadership positions overseeing the finance portfolio. She is currently the Director of Finance at the Institute of Finance Management (IFM) of Tanzania and she is also serving on various boards in-country.

Dr. Maryam Amour

Trustee

A physician-scientist and public health specialist brings a decade of experience in health science and research, and program management combined with her current role as a lecturer and Head of Internationalization and Convocation Unit of the Muhimbili University of Health & Allied Sciences. Dr. Maryam Amour has published various scientific articles and she is an awardee of different fellowships, research, and academic excellence.

Mr. Modou M. Gaye

Trustee

A technology expert currently working as an Independent Consultant in Health Information Technology. He brings over 20 years of experience in the Health/Medical technology sphere from Tanzania and the United States of America. His career includes various roles at the FUJIFILM Medical Systems and as the former Director of Information and Communication Technology at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH).

Dr. Ellen Mkondya - Senkoro

Board Secretary

Dr. Ellen is a renowned leader in Tanzania’s public health, with over 28 years of experience boasting a three-dimensional understanding of Tanzania’s health sector from working with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania as a District Medical Officer, multilateral organization (UNFPA) and Non-Government Organizations (NGO). She currently works as the founding Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation from 2006 to date and has spearheaded transformation of the organization to become more relevant and a credible local technical hub on health systems strengthening. Through Dr. Ellen’s visionary leadership, she has represented the Non-State Actors in various policy and strategic in-country and International health sector-related dialogues with the Governments, Development Partners, Philanthropists and Private Sector. Dr. Ellen is a Medical Doctor by profession with a master’s degree in public health. She is an award recipient of the Honorary Doctor of Science D.Sc. (Honoris Causa) bestowed by The Hubert Kairuki Memorial University-Tanzania, following the massive wide-ranging contribution and success she has registered in the health sector. She is the Chair of the Board of the National Super-Specialized hospital of Muhimbili, and she also sits on the Board of the Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation founded by the First Lady of Zanzibar.
