Irish Minister Visits Tanga Region to Witness Community Health Impact

The Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland, Hon. Neale Richmond, T.D., recently visited Tanga Region to engage directly with key health stakeholders, including Community Health Workers (CHWs) and youth beneficiaries. This high-level visit reflects the strong and ongoing collaboration between the Government of Ireland (Irish Aid), the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation (BMF), and the Ministry of Health in advancing equitable healthcare services across Tanzania. Thanks to this impactful partnership, a total of 668 Community Health Workers (CHWs) have been trained and equipped with essential working tools across targeted regions. These CHWs play a vital role in bringing health services closer to the community, especially in underserved and remote areas. Since 2018, this investment has contributed to remarkable improvements in health indicators, including - A 16% increase in health facility deliveries and - A 50% increase in antenatal care (ANC) 4+ visits. Hon. Neale Richmond commended the CHWs and local health teams for their dedication and emphasized Ireland’s continued commitment to strengthening Tanzania’s health system, particularly at the community level, where access remains challenging. “We are proud to support this meaningful work. What’s happening here is more than numbers; it’s about lives improved and saved,” he remarked during his visit. As BMF continues to collaborate with local and international partners, this visit reinforces the shared mission of achieving health for all and leaving no one behind.
