Started with “Mkapa Fellows Programme” in July 2005. The programme was initiated by the Former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E Benjamin William Mkapa and the Former President of the United States of America, H.E. William Jefferson Clinton, through the financial support of the Government of the Royal Kingdom of Norway

Mkapa Foundation gradually began recruitment of the Management team and staff. Collaboratively the Board of Trustees, Management and Staff proceeded undertaking and expanding into various initiatives that focus on addressing Human Resource for Health challenges and accelerating HIV/AIDS and TB prevention, care, and treatment services, as well as Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn Child and Adolescent health services within Tanzania.

BMF redefines its vision as “ Healthy lives and well- being for all in Tanzania and the rest of Africa” as it releases its Strategic Business Plans (Strategic Business Plan III July 2019- June 2024; Strategic Business Plan IV July 2024 - June 2030). The Mkapa Legacy Initiative is a collection of initiatives that honor and sustain the legacy of The Late Benjamin William Mkapa who was the 3rd President of the United Republic of Tanzania ( 1995- 2005) and demised on 23rd July 2020. The Mkapa Foundation existence and the work it undertakes, serves as the sole legacy initiative of late Benjamin W. Mkapa thus its perpetuity is critical to enable reach the underserved and ensure healthy lives for all. The Mkapa Legacy Initiative comprises the forum famously known as The Mkapa Legacy Summit held in alternative years which started 2021; The Mkapa Fellowship Programme (MFP); the BMF Endowment Fund, and the Business Arm for health sector solutions under Imara Horizon Company.
