On the 14th July, 2021, The Benjamin Mkapa Foundation (BMF) in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania commemorated the life and legacy of the late, His Excellency Benjamin William Mkapa, Former President of Tanzania, Founder, and Settlor of the Foundation who passed away on 23rd July 2020. The event was captured in photos, videos and articles.
During her speech at the Mkapa Legacy Symposium in 2021, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan lauded the late Former President Benjamin William Mkapa for his transformative leadership during his tenure as the 3rd President of Tanzania. She highlighted his significant economic reforms, institutional developments, and the establishment of key agencies such as the National Health Insurance Fund. Samia acknowledged the symposium as a fitting tribute to Mkapa's visionary contributions and commended the Benjamin Mkapa Foundation for its impactful work in the health sector. The speech emphasized Mkapa's diplomatic prowess, his roles in mediating conflicts, and his commitment to regional initiatives.
H.E Dr. Samia shared her personal experiences, describing Mkapa as an exceptional individual with a larger-than-life presence. She urged attendees to support the Foundation's newly launched Endowment Fund, recognizing it as a crucial step in preserving Mkapa's legacy. The symposium's focus on healthcare systems and universal coverage was underlined, with hopes that proposed recommendations would contribute to healthcare improvement and address challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The commemoration was deemed the first of many, emphasizing the enduring impact of Mkapa's legacy. The speech concluded with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi, emphasizing the celebration of great men like Mkapa rather than mourning their passing.

President Mwinyi highlighted Mkapa's transformative leadership during his presidency, emphasizing economic reforms, institutional developments, and the establishment of key agencies. He praised Mkapa's diplomatic prowess, conflict mediation roles, and commitment to regional initiatives. Mwinyi shared personal experiences, describing Mkapa as an exceptional individual with extensive knowledge and charisma.

He highlighted the three main areas of focus:
