USAID Afya Yangu

The USAID Afya Yangu-Reproductive Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (USAID Afya Yangu-RMNACH) project is a five-year initiative (2022–2027) designed to enhance the demand for and utilization of quality integrated RMNCAH services in 11 targeted regions (Mwanza, Geita, Shinyanga, Mara, Simiyu, Dodoma, Manyara, Katavi, Dar es Salaam, Tabora, Tanga) and Zanzibar, particularly among women and youth.

Through collaboration with the USAID Afya Endelevu Project, USAID Afya Yangu actively engages in coordinating HRH placement and providing training/capacity building for healthcare workers in Mwanza, Mara, Simiyu, Geita, Katavi, and Zanzibar.

The proposed approaches, strategies, and activities are in alignment with the Government of Tanzania’s Health Sector Strategic Plan V-July 2021-Jan 2026 (HSSP V) and Health Sector Strategic Plan IV (HSSP IV 2021 – 2025) for Zanzibar.

Both strategic plans acknowledge the pivotal role of community and facility-based interventions, guided by locally generated evidence and globally proven best practices, to enhance Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) outcomes. The project collaborates closely with the Ministry of Health (MOH) Tanzania Mainland, particularly through the Division of Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health Services (DRMCHS), the Health Promotion Section (HPS), the Directorate of Nursing and Midwifery Services (DNMS), and the Directorate of Human Resources Development (DHRD). Additionally, the project partners with the MOH Zanzibar -Integrated Reproductive Child Health Program (IRCHP), health promotion unit, and PO-RALG to identify key priority areas for support.

USAID Afya Yangu – RMNCAH utilizes a client-centered and results-driven approach in program implementation while amplifying best practices and accelerating progress with the use of innovations to achieve the following intermediate results:

  • 1. Improved access to quality, client centered RMNCAH services in both health facilities and the surrounding communities
  • 2. Improved ability of individuals to practice positive health- seeking and self-care behaviors
  • 3. Enhanced enabling environment for quality RMNCAH service provisionn

Theory of Change

Theory of Change focuses on health sector challenges including sub-optimal quality of care, limited access to timely care, harmful gender and social norms, slow policy adoption and low accountability with sustainability drivers which are; to increase accountability, intensify commitment, strengthen capacity and transform norms. The guiding principles are: client centered; locally led and owned; applying behaviour integration; results driven; and seamless gender integration.

Sub-IR 3.1 – Improved availability and operationalization of strategies, policies, and guidelines

Through BMF and Jhpiego sub contract under above Sub-IR 3.1; BMF is mandated to  improve availability and use of policies, guidelines, protocols in the supported regions, councils and health facilities through policies  adoption, endorsement, dissemination and use by developing  policy framework to guide the process.
